NORWALK UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST CLAIMS ATTORNEY
Unfortunately, many individuals walk away hurt from the scene of an accident believing there would be no way for them to get compensation for their injuries either because they were either injured by a hit-and-run driver or because the driver does not carry sufficient insurance to cover their damages. However, you may still be able to collect on the uninsured/underinsured motorist provision of your insurance policy.
-
Underinsured motorist coverage covers you, your relatives who reside with you, and any passengers in your car if they were injured by a driver who carries insufficient liability insurance on their car to cover your injuries, so long as the at fault driver’s policy limits are less than your underinsured motorist coverage (this changes if you carry underinsured motorist conversion coverage). For example, suppose you are injured in an accident with damages totaling $500,000, but the driver of the other car only has $300,000 in liability coverage, and you have $400,000 in underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage. In this scenario, although your damages are $500,000 you would only be able to collect $400,000 in total, $300,000 from the driver’s policy, and $100,000 from your own underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage. However, if you carry underinsured motorist conversion coverage, you will be able to collect the balance of the $200,000 from your own insurance company.

Uninsured motorist coverage covers you, your relatives who reside with you, and any passengers in your car if they were injured by a driver who either carries no insurance, or by a hit-and-run driver. In this scenario your entire recovery will be limited to your uninsured/underinsured policy limits on your own insurance.
The minimum amount of liability coverage in the state of Connecticut is $20,000 per person, $40,000 per accident.
